This discussion thread is for the OCFMA Energy Subcommittee members with respect to battery storage. We encourage all 24 Ontario Colleges as well as Ontario Universities to reach out to discuss past, current and future projects when it comes to the storage of energy inside a battery. This stored energy, in turn, would be utilized to power our facilities and to help reduce our utility fees and our carbon footprints.
For guidance, a list of questions have been asked below to all Ontario post-secondary educational institutions:
1. Have you, are you or will you participate in battery storage? If yes, who is the organization you worked with or are presently working with?
2. What is your primary motive when working with battery storage?
A) Reduce GA (global adjustment) costs
B) For participating in DR (Demand Response) programs?
C) To tie into renewable energy technologies?
D) For research?
E) Other?
F) Not interested in battery storage at this time3. What have been some of the successes that your organization has had when it comes to battery storage?
A) Reduced energy costs?
B) Reduced GHG emissions?
C) Improved public/ political image?
D) Other?
E) N/A4. What have been some of the challenges that your organization has had when it comes to battery storage?
A) Facilities operations?
B) LDC and Hydro One requirements?
C) Funding constraints?
C) Other?
E) N/AThe attached document lists 5 current Ontario Colleges that are in discussion on this topic:
1. Lambton College
2. Loyalist College
3. Algonquin College
4. Humber College
5. Seneca CollegeWe are requesting feedback from as many Ontario institutions as possible.

We have had initial discussions and received a high-level proposal from Enel X. We are actively looking for ways to reduce GA costs and battery storage remains one of the preferred solutions. Very interested in hearing lessons learned from other institutions and continuing the discussions with other interested parties.

Hi Everyone, here is Fanshawes response:
1. Have you, are you or will you participate in battery storage? If yes, who is the organization you worked with or are presently working with?
— we currently are not in any active discussions on battery storage.2. What is your primary motive when working with battery storage?
B) For participating in DR (Demand Response) programs
C) To tie into renewable energy technologies4. What have been some of the challenges that your organization has had when it comes to battery storage?
A) Facilities operations- yes venting concerns. Also Space concerns: prime location for battery storage is in mechanical rooms, when space is already limited.
B) LDC and Hydro One requirements…. Always !
C) Funding- Yes, still other projects to do that have better paybacks. We are Class B facility, so peak shaving is not a current priority.Great discussion !
