As we look to develop new space, we find ourselves up against whether to design classrooms with power to each seat and fixed furniture configurations or, limited power and flexible furniture configurations.
Is there a optimal balance to meet current requirements? How have you approached recent designs?

Hi Rich
We have been tasked with installing more electrical outlets in the fixed seating areas, to make those rooms more flexible for BYOD or for computer programming classes ( they want hardwired data as well.. the wifi in areas can be spotty).
The flexible seating has not been an issue as most of those rooms are more about class collaboration and discussions.
In Flexible labs, we have some areas with power outlets that retract into the ceiling space. ( safety chains on them of course so they dont fall on anyone if pulled too hard.)
New construction, in the floor are used in some areas, but the plates are sometimes an issue.

Hi Rich,
At Algonquin we have moved forward with implementing “Active Learning” classrooms that are fully flexible with perimeter power only (maximizing the number of outlets). So far there have not been any issues with this design.

Hey Rich,
At Sault College we’ve struggled to find a flexible but durable solution utilizing floor boxes. I’ve found the recessed floor box lids seem to break and are costly to initially install. It is also difficult to find a solution that accommodates every possible furniture arrangement. Moving forward, I’m leaning to plug-ins available around the perimeter only. Any disconnected arrangements in the middle will have to do without. My rational is based on ~50% of the occupancy requiring a power source at one time. The latest batteries last many hours without requiring a charge and many of our common spaces allow students to charge their devices if required. I’d be interested in how you decide to proceed.
Cheers,
Mk

Thanks for the insightful feedback. I believe we are leaning towards the approach Melissa described above but, there are a few conversations pending before we decide on a go-forward standard. …Rich
